Córdoba is a city in Andalusia , Spain , capital of the homonymous province, located in a depression on the banks of the Guadalquivir and the foothills of Sierra Morena.
It is the third largest city of Andalusia in both size and population , only behind Sevilla and Malaga. Today it is a town , in whose old town we can still admire buildings with architectural elements when Cordoba was the capital of Hispania Ulterior in the days of the Roman Republic , or Andalusia province during the Roman Empire and the Caliphate of Córdoba during the Muslim period , whose leaders ruled much of the Iberian Peninsula. According to archaeological evidence , the city once numbered around one million people to the tenth century , the most trusted , educated and affluent city worldwide .

Its historic center was declared a World Heritage Site by Unesco in 1994, but ten years earlier, in 1984, was the Mosque- Cathedral of Cordoba. Córdoba was the birthplace of three great philosophers : the Roman Stoic Seneca , the Muslim Averroes and the Jewish Maimonides. Also born Lucano in Cordoba , Ibn Hazm , Juan de Mena, Luis de Góngora and Angel de Saavedra poets , also known as the Duke of Rivas.
